Dear Colleagues and Students:

I’m writing to address any concerns you may have with regard to the A-H1N1 “swine” influenza outbreak in Mexico.

On April 27, Our General Rector decided to take proactive measures and declared that classes of the Universidad de Guadalajara including the Centro de Estudios para Extranjeros will be cancelled until the 5th of May. All activities will resume on Tuesday, May 5th, 2009 unless we receive further instructions.

The Spring II session is about to start. Placement tests for new students will be handle May 05 and Wednesday May 06 we’ll restart classes at CEPE.

CEPE will continue to be aware of all government notices regarding this issue and will continue to send notices to all partner organizations regarding the current situation in the region. We will be posting important news on our Web site: www.spanish-spanish.info

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact our offices.

Sincerely,

Jeffry Fernandez
Director

Guadalajara: A safe place to Study!

Dear Student:

As I am sure you are all aware, there have been many reports as of late on the safety of Mexico in the news media and also on the US department of state website. Though the recent violence has been tragic, here at the Centro de Estudios para Extranjeros at the University of Guadalajara, we would like to assure you that neither the city of Guadalajara nor the state of Jalisco have been aversely affected by recent violence in the border cities between the USA and Mexico.

Mexico is an incredibly large and diverse country. With Guadalajara located in the centre of the country, the CEPE program is literally hundreds of miles from any region in which there has been increased violence. The US Department of State urges that travellers be alert when in these border regions and we at CEPE echo that sentiment. However, students should also be made aware that Guadalajara has not been affected by the recent violence located hundreds of miles away.

Mexico is a country of rich diversity, natural beauty, and incredible educational opportunities. We at CEPE hope that the terrible events occurring in the border cities do not discourage students from experiencing the myriad opportunities available to students here in central Mexico.

If you have any questions at all regarding safety in Mexico in general or safety in the city of Guadalajara specifically, please do not hesitate to contact us. We in the CEPE program at the University of Guadalajara have worked for over sixty years to provide the highest level of personal attention and professional excellence possible to our partners and students, including maintaining a safe environment for our visiting students.

Sincerely,

Jeffry Fernandez
Director

Advantages of attending CEPE in Guadalajara:

CEPE is located in one of the most exciting and stimulating neighborhoods in Guadalajara between the historic city center and the neighborhood “La Minerva”, a City landmark. Students can easily walk to a variety of delicious cafes and restaurants, art galleries, museums, rhythmic nightclubs, gorgeous modern movie theaters, as well as banks, grocery stores and other helpful businesses. The neighborhood is considered one of Guadalajara’s safest and most cosmopolitan. Our carefully selected home-stay families and bed and breakfast are also located within this secure and charming neighborhood.

Though students can find everything they could possible need in the blocks around CEPE, students will also find that exploring other neighborhoods of Guadalajara is quite easy todo. A ten to fifteen minute bus will take students from CEPE to the gorgeous historical center of Guadalajara where they can visit important historical sites, wander the markets and sample cheap and authentic Mexican food. Museums abound with discounts for students carrying a CEPE student ID card. Just fifteen minutes in the other direction and students will find themselves in attractive Tlaquepaque, an artisanal neighborhood where students can people watch, buy traditional goods and of course eat Guadalajara’s famous tortas ahogadas, Guadalajara's traditional sour-dough sandwich.
